INTIMIDATION TACTICS

We've been hearing, and reading a lot of political threats being made towards the Council Members who are going to support the re-direction of EDIT funds tonight.
We consider this insulting, and we resent the 'bullying' tactics from those who have made these threats.
We strongly feel that your opinions are indeed the minority, and we intend to stand behind the Council Members who support the resolution coming before them tonight.
We also pledge that we will support their re-election campaigns based on their courage and committment to the best interests of the City of New Albany.
They understand the implications of NOT complying with Federal directives, and they have listened to the MAJORITY of Citizens who are fed up with Garner's bad decisions.
Actually, not only with Garner's, but with the last 3 administrations before him as well.
They all contributed to digging this monsterous hole we are only now trying to climb out of by making their own mistakes in judgement, and laying the costs of such at the feet of the taxpayers. All the while ignoring the sewer problems that arose back in 1995 when the EPA finally took measurable steps to hold the City of New Albany legally liable for failing to meet the Clean Water Act, and thus made DEMANDS that the failing sanitary sewage system infrastructure be corrected.
Here we are 12 years and $80 million later, and that infrastructure STILL isn't fixed, so now the EPA has taken away ANY opportunities for City growth by restricting sewer credits and doubling the required annual expenditures from $270K to $500K as well as doubling the oversight period fom one year to two.
Meanwhile, our City has built a Parking Garage that cost us dearly, and a multi-million $$ Firehouse that doesn't function properly, and a multitude of other bad decisions that has drained the City finances and left us no closer to solving these crippling problems with the sewers, and now they want the Citizens to pay another $30 million when those costs can be mitigated WITH OTHER FUNDS!
This Scribner Place project could have very easily become a compromise between the two 'factions' of thinking, about what is best for the City of New Albany.
However, it seems obvious that the 'progressive' thinking crowd is an ALL OR NOTHING sort of bunch who don't grasp the concept of compromise.
These Council Members who stand strong tonight, to do what is right and what is best for New Albany's future, are to be commended. They understand what MUST be done is very different from what WANTS to be done. They are doing the RIGHT thing.
UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE THE SUPPORT OF THE MAJORITY!!!

    I would also add to the previous posters response to Mr. Stewart's behavior in that while at the podium, he apologized for those that he deemed "ignorant" and "new."

    It is fine to have differing opinions, but name calling in either direction (whether loudly spoken from the audience or with a microphone at the podium) I would say is uncalled for, and most of all, immature.

  • Having just read the article in the Tribune regarding last night't meeting I am both surprised and dismayed.

    First of all the headline is incorrect. The Council placed the bond money in a non-reverting fund.

    Secondly, there was not one word mentioned about Valla Ann's talk about conflict of interest and various other important matters. When she was at the podium the audience was in complete silence except for a disruption by Roger which was promply quieted.

    Why did Mr. Campbell leave her name out of the list of speakers mentioned? Was he following the orders of his "other" boss Mr. Garner?

    Is this Administration so afraid of Valla Ann that they are trying to keep her name out of the press?

    Try as you might Mr. Garner, but Valla Ann will not hide her light under a bushel basket. I heard someone ask who she was last night, and another person told them. Word of mouth cannot be stopped. She will receive the recognition and respect she deserves. The people will make sure of that.

  • Last nights meeting was certainly a show of everyone's hand, and sadly, a show of some citizen's bad behavior.
    We would like to express our deepest thanks and appreciation to those who spoke last night, as well as all who attended this very important meeting.
    We feel very good about the victories made last night, and we vow to keep fighting the good fight for a RESPECTABLE and HONEST leadership for our City.

    Last evening, on the third floor, there was a confrontation in the men's room between 2 Council Members and one citizen.
    The citizen was told that if such-and-such happend, then, this citizens would be thrown out of the meeting.
    Anyone have any guesses as to who the Council Members are, and who the citizen is?

    There's a lot of issues still swirling from Council meeting, but usually when someone is ejected from the meeting -- they are ejected from the building, not patted on the shoulder all the way to the door and then taken outside in the hallway to stand with the Mayor, who probably sent him in there in the first place to do WHATEVER he was trying to do to Mr. Blevins.

  • Good article CJ, about the sewers' and where the financials are standing. We only wish you could have been at the Sewer Board meeting yesterday. The Sewer Board CAN NOT GET FINANCIALS. They are not paying ANY CLAIMS, won't even look at them.

    WHAT IS THE PROBLEM AND WHERE IS OUR MONEY? The Sewer Board Attorney can give a dissertation in Council, but the Sewer Board CAN'T GET FINANCIALS? There is something very wrong with this picture, but hey, what else is new. We need the answers to these questions. We do not understand.

    I think he actually thought he might get a job that would pay him something, even at OUR expense.     Under two minutes, I try to follow the rules.

    My first reaction when seeing the award for FOS was laughter. I thought a little more about and decided that it would have to among the most informative blogs. Really!! When Erik finds something that he can copy, word for word, it is usually very informative. The problem is when Erik decides do something original thinking and writing, it all falls apart.

    Come on down, we need to get the word out to the 1st district. We need to make folks aware that their current councilman is not looking out for there best intrest. All he cares about is his ego!

    At the city council meeting he talked about how he had to move away for a job for a few years, came back to huge sewer bill. Can someone get him a job in aother state again, be nice to see a for sale sign on west seventh street.

    may have to make that several for sale signs, forgot he is a slumlord now along with his sidekick.
